It was a truly beautiful February day on the links! Congratulations to our top golfers nationally. Andy Pomeroy of Victoria Landing recorded a Hole-In-One on way to the low round of the day at -5, while Janet Fitzpatrick also of Victoria Landing took home National Silver with a round of -4. A Manitoba sweep of the medals was prevented when Jean-Claude Gelly from Residences de la Gappe recorded a -3 tying Harold Ward from Seine River and both taking home a National Bronze medal. Congratulations to our medallists and to all of our golfers coast to coast!
We thank everyone who put on their Plus Fours, picked up a “club,” and showed us their best swing. Caddies were not needed today but the spectators were awesome! Once again our Mission Staff at each residence made sure the competitors were taken care of making our second annual Senior Games Wii Golf event a great day of fun and camaraderie.
Quotes of the Day:
1) “Live life to the fullest, Walk, Love, and Be Happy, and participate, participate, participate!”
– Ellen Sterling
2) “I didn’t know I had that quick of a reaction time... Wii Golf shows age is only a number if I can even get a Bogey at 94!”
- Lena Chernichiwan
3) “These events are sure making me feel alive and kicking”
– Bernice Frick.
Residence Summaries From the Chef De Missions
Our golf competition at Preston Park featured 3 golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. All of our players were beginners but were up for the challenge. We had a number of residents watching, learning and cheering too. There were a lot of laughs when the game stated that a player should give up after 10 attempts, Jane Mullens said “really? They want me to quit? How am I supposed to get better?” We have a tenacious group here, nowhere to go but up.
Our golf competition at Seine River featured half a dozen golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. The rivalry from last year’s Senior Games was renewed again this year. Mr. Harold Ward sank a 20-foot putt to clinch the gold medal over Mr. John Evans. Last year Mr. Evans won the gold medal in extra holes. The competition ended with a friendly handshake and Mr. Evans saying “I’ll get you next year Harold!” With a crowd of over 30 cheering fans, the Wii golfers experienced having to play in front of a roaring crowd.
Our golf competition at Victoria Landing featured 17 golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. Our spectators cheered wildly when Andy Pomeroy (92) got a Hole in One!! He was quite pleased and the smile on his face was worth a million! Today’s words of wisdom from one of our players, Ellen Sterling, “Live life to the fullest, Walk, Love, and Be Happy, and participate, participate, participate!”
Our golf competition at Sturgeon Creek I featured 15 golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. It was a great day on the course here at Sturgeon Creek 1 with lots of fun and laughter had by everyone. It was neck and neck down to the last hole. Golf Assistant Jim Britten shared words or encouragement to all the players at our award ceremony letting everyone k now they were all winners for just coming out and trying. “It’s about having fun not wining”. We were joined at the event by the Arthritis Society.
It was a wonderful day to play WII golf at Phase 3 & 4 of Residences de la Gappe. One of our resident says that ``Residence de la Gappe is the best residence in Canada``. GO! Residence de la Gappe! While at Phase One M. Trépanier and Mme Boucher had the same score in the finals so they played another game against each other for the gold and silver medal, and finally it was M. Trépanier who won with +2 (Mme Boucher : +6). The funny thing is that M. Trépanier and Mme Boucher are siblings! So we had a family final and the two highest medals stayed in the family.
At College Park we had fun golfing – the best part – no mosquitoes and no clubs to carry! Many had never tried it before and loved it. Lots of ooo’s and wow’s as the ball jumped the hole or fell in. We hope to have a monthly tournament.
Our Wii Golf competition at Summerwood Village was a huge success; featuring 46 participants battling for the medals. Synergy Dental, Synergy Pharmacy, Certified Reflexologist, Certified Massage Therapist and Jockey Clothing were here for the day and donated four door prizes for the seniors! George Cutting of 98 years old won the gold medal today without any difficulty at all- so impressive!! “I didn’t know I had that quick of a reaction time... Wii Golf shows age is only a number if I can even get a Bogey at 94!”
- Lena Chernichiwan
Our golf competition at Beacon Heights featured 7 golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. Mrs McLellan is a 3 times silver medalist so far; she stated” this was the most challenging game”. She invented a new shot (the McLellan) where she hits the flag pole and the ball drops right into the hole, once done in training and once during the competition. Our Bean bag toss game, we had 10 participants. We also had a bean bags toss competition for the residents of our Gentlecare unit (dementia), if you could have seen how proud they were of that medal around their neck priceless!!! We were joined at the event by local Canadian Diabetes association who indicate what this was the best way to golf! He hopes that Beacon Heights wins a national medal because the group was so involved and full of energy! We thank them for their participation and support.
Our golf competition at Rutherford Heights featured 16 golfers teeing off for a chance at the medals. As crowds gathered more and more residents wanted to join in on the fun. Everyone loved hearing all the support and cheers from fellow team mates! The playoffs were close with Mr. Kirillo finishing on top just ahead of our competitive ladies. Congratulations to all our medal winners!!!! We were joined at the event by Vidy from the Canadian Diabetes Association, who handed out calendars and great information for our residents. We also had two students in the Wise Owl Program from the Edmonton Police Department who were here supporting our wii golf event. We thanked them for all their participation and support. I asked a resident how she was enjoying the games, and all she said was: “these events are sure making me feel alive and kicking”
– Bernice Frick.
