DAY 1 OF THE ALL SENIORS CARE GAMES A ROLLICKING SUCCESS

Hundreds of seniors across the country walked their way to fun and better health January 25 on Day 1 of the first annual All Seniors Care Senior Games – five days of fitness events at 12 seniors’ residences in the communities of Edmonton, Brandon, Winnipeg, Stratford, and Gatineau-Aylmer.

The Games are part of the All Seniors Care commitment to provide seniors with innovative ways to develop and maintain an active and vibrant lifestyle. From January 25th to January 29th the company is hosting the Games to provide an opportunity for seniors to “get into the game” in a friendly and caring social setting.

Monday’s walking event inspired many sedentary seniors to challenge themselves. At the Sturgeon Creek I retirement residence in Winnipeg, two tenants over the age of 100 completed the route, which covered all four floors of the building. In Alberta at the Summerwood Village residence, two tenants went the distance in wheelchairs.

At all residences, participants were cheered on and accompanied by local celebrities, MLAs, city councilors, students, professional athletes, mascots, firemen, and a few furry, four-legged friends. “You know everyone is enjoying themselves when they come off the elevator smiling, singing, and dancing,” said one tenant who walked the course.

In Sherwood Park, Alberta, Mayor Kathy Olsen was piped into the Opening Ceremony with the day’s participants, and in Winnipeg, Mayor Sam Katz joined in the fun. “This event is a first of its kind and we congratulate All Seniors Care on their forward thinking and dedication to healthy living for older adults,” he said to those attending the Seine River residence event.

The Seniors Games continue until Friday, January 29th and include new and innovative “virtual” sports that are becoming popular because they allow people of all abilities to get active. The week’s events include Wii bowling on Tuesday, card and board games on Wednesday, Wii golf on Thursday, and billiards and bocce on Friday. Participants compete for medals in each event.

All events are held indoors in the company’s residences. The fun gets underway each morning and spectators and participants are always welcome, please visit our website for more details www.allseniorscare.com/seniorsgames
