Seine River Retirement Residence

1st place: Ken Clark (Dakota House) score: 224

2nd place: John Buckingham (Dakota House) score: 201

3rd place: Norman Zelmer (Seine River) score: 148

Our competition at Seine River featured 30 bowlers battling for the medals.

Our tenant, Norman Zelmer, who played for the first time today, made his way all the way to the finals and won the Bronze medal with a final score of 148.

Our bowlers were joined by 5 tenants from Dakota House, proudly wearing Seine River winter games T-shirts, who enthusiastically participated in the Senior Games. Rick Stephenchew, a fire prevention officer with the Winnipeg Fire Department, was on hand this afternoon to present the medals, along with the Chef de Mission, Mrs, Joan Evans, and her assistant, Mr. Jack Richmond. This event was well attended by participants and spectators alike, and there was a great deal of cheering, clapping, and laughter.  We even had our first Seine River wave to cheer on the participants. Everyone enjoyed a heart smart lunch and a presentation by the Heart and Stroke foundation.

Rick Stephenchew, who presented the Wii Bowling medals, said “Congratulations to all participants and to All Seniors Care for the vision in starting the Seniors Winter Games! I hope that when I am your age that I am able to accomplish what all of you have done today.”

Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence

Watching the residents of Shaftesbury one could have closed their eyes and re-opened them and felt like they were watching a PBA game on television.  There was extreme quiet and great anticipation while the bowler executed his shot.  Once the ball was delivered, there was applause and then the respectful silence while the next ball was thrown.  The Closing Ceremony began with tenant Sarah Hochman, pianist, playing Seventy Six Trombones March for the VIP party as they entered the dining room. Sue Boreskie, Executive Director of the Reh-Fit Centre was our VIP today and did a wonderful job of affirming the participation of all the games participants!  Besides her full time job at the Reh-Fit Centre, Sue serves as Canada’s representative (Chef de Mission) on the Commonwealth Games coming up this fall in India. She also serves on the Canada Games committee.  Sue made reference to the recent study that found that active lifestyles with regular exercise contributed to good physical health and good brain health.  She encouraged the participants to continue in these endeavours.  Sue presented the medals the winners of the Wii Bowling Event:   Gold Medal Winner – Harry Rosenberg//  Silver Medal Winner – Thelma Stebbing// Bronze Medal Winner – Sybil Rosenberg.  We were also appreciative of Winnipeg Transit who hosted an Information Table where many tenants stopped to chat and receive information.  Another great day at the Senior Games here at Shaftesbury Park.

The room was full of energy as everyone cheered on the participants in all rounds.

Our bowlers were joined by local dignitary Sharon Blady, MLA for Kirkfield Park, who awarded our gold, silver, and bronze medals at the award ceremony. Winnipeg In Motion also joined us and really encouraged all tenants to stay active and have fun.

Wii bowling went over so well that I had six tenants decide that they too would like to learn how to play. I assisted in programming their new Wii characters and they had their first game following the finals.

Our bowlers were joined by local dignitaries; Jane Troop the VP of Community and Long Term Care BRHA, Tara Common the Healthy Living Coordinator RHA, and Nikki Rondeau from Transitions and co-sponsor of the Games. All spoke before lunch, they offered words of encouragement to everyone participating in the All Seniors Care Senior Games 2010.

Jane Troop said:  “What you are doing this week at Victoria Landing is something each of you should be very proud of and I challenge you to stay as active as possible throughout the year. If you commit to participating in just one activity each day, it would help you so much and you would continue to be excellent role models in our community”.
