BRAINS, BRILLIANCE, BREAKFAST TELEVISION: DAY 3: Manitoba Results

Seine River

Day 3 offered a whole new insight to Senior Living at All Seniors Care. Breakfast television joined Seine River Retirement Residence and filmed their morning show in the Majestic theater and Bocce Court. The Residents became instant celebrities to all their friends and families.  Many of our tenants were dressed in their team shirts and ready to face the camera for City TV’s Breakfast Club show at 7:00 am this morning. We were live; presenting the various games of the day including Bocce training, Jeopardy, and Wii Bowling. Yesterday’s medal winners of the Wii Bowling were present to showcase their talent for the cameras. There were approximately 40 tenants who participated in the event and afterwards enjoyed a breakfast of fruit, muffins and fresh baked scones.

Today’s games featured 4 rounds of mind stimulating Jeopardy and a Bridge tournament. The medal winners of Jeopardy were Mrs. Betty Alward (gold), Mr. Mac Tye (silver), and Ms. Lillian Lawson (bronze). Medal winners for Bridge were Mrs. Kathryn Lawson (gold), Mr. Joe Allan (silver), and Mrs. Doreen Craig (bronze). Ken McKinnon, Hall of Famer, Commissioner of Hockey Canada, and his wife, Pat, were on hand this afternoon to present the medals to all of the recipients.

“This was such an exciting day!” remarked Mrs. Alward, who went on to say that she never thought that at this stage of her life that she “would be able to accomplish so much in one day!”

Today the Winter Games presented the more reserved and intense games of participation.  Cribbage, Scrabble and Bridge competitions took place throughout the day in the various venues throughout the building.  The Heart and Stroke Foundation hosted a very informative display that drew many tenants’ attention.  Our VIP for today was called away on a family emergency so our able Chef de Mission stood in and presented the awards to the winners in each category.  Sarah Hochman, pianist and tenant played celebratory music to set the tone and the audience applauded the achievements of the winners and the participants.  Our sponsor, Tenecom Solutions’ letter of congratulations was read and well received by all in attendance.

Sturgeon creek 1

It was a great day at Sturgeon Creek with 40 card players coming out to try their hand at Whist, Crib and Bridge.  Some players hadn’t played in years as Bill Moore said “I haven’t played Crib since the war.” Amazingly he came in with the 4th highest score of the morning.

The scores were close in Whist with husband and wife Doug and Jean West taking home silver and bronze with one point separating their wins.

It was a full day for many Bridge players that played games in the morning and bridge in the afternoon. The mind got a good work out today for many tenants. They’ll be making bids in their dreams tonight.

We were delighted to have the Manitoba Alzheimer Society here to give a keynote speech at our award ceremony. Many excellent tips were given to all tenants on how to stay mind healthy.

Victoria Landing

Today we started with a Trivia challenge at 10:00am. We had 15 participants out to do a Canadian trivia quiz that was created for the Games. There were 50 questions that were read out loud ,and after each question the contestants had some quick time to write down their responses. We had a lot of laughs and really worked-out our brains, which was the goal of our games today.

We were joined at lunch by Adam Brown – events coordinator from the Alzheimer’s Society. He spoke to the tenants about maintaining good physical and mental health. He had lots of good advice and commended all the tenants for keeping active and staying connected. He concluded by reminding us that life is short & everyday is a gift!

This afternoon we had both a crib & scrabble tournaments going on. We had 20 out for crib and 12 out to play scrabble.  Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely and we ran out of time. we will be continuing day4/5, and we are looking forward to our awards ceremony on Friday to see who will be taking home the gold, silver & bronze in each game played today!
