The Beaver Hall Group, 1920-1923

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Canada’s Unsung Modernists

The nightlife was wild. The jazz hot. The roaring 20s made Montreal a hotspot for the free-spirited and rebellious.  In a city that eschewed prohibition, the time was ripe for a group of dedicated painters to make their debut.

Initially considered Montreal’s counterpart to Toronto’s Group of Seven, their artwork was dramatically different: rather than using images of untamed northern landscapes to depict the Canadian ethos, Beaver Hall artists embraced the modernity, vibrant colours and excitement of Montreal during the jazz age.

Aside from their exceptional work, the Beaver Hall Group was particularly remarkable because they dared break with tradition by accepting women members – both Francophone and Anglophone. The result was a legacy of women painters who now rank among Canada’s most outstanding artists.

Join All Seniors Care as we celebrate the short lived, but culturally important, Beaver Hall Group.  To honour their 100th Anniversary, ASC residents are creating works of art that emulate the Beaver Hall style from October 8-19th, culminating in a national event on October 21st.

Our newly launched virtual art gallery will exhibit resident work through to December.

Next exhibit: Love Lane project inspired by Anna Doran can be viewed starting February 2021.
