Did you know that Beanbag toss is one of the greatest games to play with your Grandparents? At Auburn Height Retirement Residence we had 26 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come.

The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly but, in the end, the Round Robin produced 10 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Sharron knocked out all others with great throws. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony with Dianne Cooper-Ponte Calgary Seniors Resource Society who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Harold exclaimed “I still got it after all these years!”

Sage Hill Retirement Residence

At Sage Hill Retirement Residence, 24 competitors entered in Pétanque A-tout before enjoying a day at camp. The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 24 Pétanque players vying for medals!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by MP Pat Kelly who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

In keeping with our Love Letter’s theme, our beautiful resident P.D told us, “My husband and I have been married for 62 years. We still fight sometimes, but we never go to bed angry. That is why we are still married to this day.”

St. Albert Retirement Residence

At St. Albert Retirement Residence, 28 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The afternoon got off to an excellent start as throws were made, others missed, some slid off the end, others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 28 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Shannon P from the City of St. Albert, Connecting Generation Program, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Jean had the crowd laughing as she danced up to the Podium to receive her Bronze medal!

Betty exclaimed, “Today was a busy day…but a GREAT day! I think I’ll go to bed at 7, so I am ready for tomorrow!” Summer campers had many laughs during our Would You Rather questions! They loved the question “Would you rather be an ogre or a troll?” I’d say the room was divided!!

Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence

At Rutherford Heights, 25 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, others missed, some slid off the end, others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 6 competitors with scores worthy of the championship! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Mrs. H. knocked out all others with great throws! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Jimmy Morrison from Operation Friendship Seniors Society, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Beanbag Toss Medalist Clara exclaimed: “This is my third medal of the week!”

Summer campers had a great day filled with Zumba, camp games, colouring, and sing-along entertainment!

MacTaggart Place Retirement Residence

At MacTaggart Place Retirement Residence, 19 competitors warmed-up for our bean bag toss event, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The afternoon got off to an excellent start as throws were made, others missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 19 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talent. “Who said bean bag toss was easy! These holes are not big enough,” commented Dale. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Terry with Care RX, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Summer campers had a great start to their day with our Ukulele Camp Sing Along. We belted out all the songs while enjoying the beautiful sunshine outside! Laughter filled the room during our “Would you Rather” game. Married couple, Mr. & Mrs. T were asked if they would rather have a facial recognition machine to let you in the house OR a bedroom that transforms to a science lab? The response from Mrs. T was, “Well, Mr. T definitely needs the facial recognition so he doesn’t have to fumble with his keys all the time!” They have been bugging each other all week and making everyone around them laugh.

Summerwood Village Retirement Residence

At Summerwood Village,11 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 11 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Jean T. Scores knocked out all others with great throws! Our staff member, Gayle, did mini interviews with all of the playoff players, which was a nice addition to some friendly competitive banter! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Seniors United Now, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

SASKATCHEWAN

College Park I Retirement residence

At College Park 1 Retirement Residence, 13 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 4 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Mr. O., our College Park reigning champion, knocked out all others with great throws scoring a total of 4500 points in the qualifying round and a total of 3650 in the play offs!

We take bean bag toss very seriously here at College Park 1, so the competitors were very excited to show off their throwing skills in the ASCSG! Even though the residents were competing against each other, many cheers and words of encouragement were given to and by other players! After the friendly competition, the Summer Campers were very excited and ready to learn about the Mi’kmaq language, try out the “Would You Rather?” game, and have a sing along with all their favorite and most memorable songs!”

Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Dwayne with Caring Hearts Regina, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Chris O. exclaimed: “Its just good to be able to participate, and I am so grateful to College Park and All Seniors Care for putting on such an amazing week of activities. Its a great time for fellowship and friendly competition.”

College Park II Retirement residence

The morning got off to a riveting start with 22 competitors participating in the Round Robin beanbag toss event. The bistro was jam packed with competitors and spectators alike.  Throws were made, others missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end, we were impressed with the skills and talent showcased!  Denise P knocked out all others in the finals. College Park 2 started a new tradition of annual ‘family photos’ following the stiff competition this morning, everyone gathered for a love themed photo.  Summer campers had an action-packed day of Sunrise Zumba, Would You Rather, and beanbag toss. Residents even put their minds to the test with learning some of the Mi’kmaq language through colouring, which was enjoyed by all! The day was wrapped up with a good old fashioned camp style sing along.

After the round robin 102-year-old Hazel W. stated, ‘You are never too old to have a great time and try your best!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Vision Loss Rehab, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Preston Park I Retirement Residence

At Preston Park, 22 competitors accepted the Bean Bag Toss challenge, while spectators gathered with great enthusiasm to watch things to heat up! The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end, others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 4 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by the skills and talents on display. And Marie coming out on top! Marie won her second gold of the week and has added it to her ever-growing medal collection, she now has 15 medals in total!  Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Gerard from the Saskatchewan Ostomy Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their outstanding performances in Bean Bag Toss today. Olga was happy to take part in all the events so far and exclaimed “The best part is competing with friends and just having fun, it doesn’t matter if you win!”

Preston Park II Retirement Residence

At Preston Park II, morning got off to an excellent start with Summer Camp’s a quizzing game of ‘Would You Rather’ and colouring beautiful Mi’kmaq drawings that helped us learn the language.

The afternoon kicked into high gear with 14 competitors warming up for our Seniors Games toss event, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. Carol P, participant said: “whoever said bean bag tossing was easy hasn’t participated on the All Seniors Care Seniors Games!”  Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Leslie Macala, Kristi Baker, and Jennifer White of the Saskatoon Council on Aging, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances and performed a small cheer for all those who attended. Gold Medalist Duncan M exclaimed: “Hmm I am pretty good at this! I think I love it!”

MANITOBA

River Ridge I Retirement Residence

At River Ridge 1, 14 competitors warmed up and took part in our bean bag toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end, others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 4 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Our Bean Bag Board goes up to 500 points.  500 points was scored over 10 times during qualifiers and playoffs.  No easy feat! Bob G. scored over 1000 points both in the qualifiers and playoffs.  The crowd was astounded! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Health & Wellness Director Stephanie Campbell, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.  This was their first games for all three medalists today! Upon collecting his Gold Medal, Bob G. exclaimed: “Me?! I won?! What?!”

Summer campers had a great day starting it off grooving to music during Zumba class.  Followed by a rousing debate of “Would You Rather.”  Campers learned all about the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island.  They then joined in an afternoon sing along.  Another great day at camp!

River Ridge II Retirement Residence

Todays Competition drew Competitors from all floors, the heat was on and the energy was high – the Beanbag Toss was intense! At River Ridge 2, 22 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Campbell McIntyre from Gifts of Grace Food Bank, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Summer campers had a great day of exercise, crafts, and singing! Only one person in the singalong crowd today didn’t know the Camp singalong song “If I had a Hammer” and that was Health & Wellness Director, Nikki J (she sure knows it now) ???? “Isn’t it amazing how we hear 1 or 2 notes of a song and the memory just knows what song it is! Music is Love and I love to sing,” shouted Bernice!

Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence

At Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, 21 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Mrs. Ruth Z. threw 3 bean bags in the 500-point hole in a row and you could hear that loud cheer across the building!! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the recreation staff, blossom staff and Emily Kinnaird from the Alzheimer’s Society, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. After receiving her Gold Medal, Ruth Z. said, “Never give up on bean bag toss and never give up on love.” She will now tell her two other sisters and her brother!

Fun Fact: Playing bean bag toss gives children and even older adults opportunities to develop their gross motor skills, increase balance and enhance directionality, which is important for reading skills. Activities that encourage movement across the midline get the Right and Left brain to work together. They also strengthen one side of the body which helps with fine motor skills.

Our summer campers at Shaftesbury had a great day of learning a new language called Mi’kmaq through colouring. They learned a few words and even used them in sentences!

Sturgeon Creek I Retirement Residence

At Sturgeon 1, 23 competitors entered our toss event, while spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. We had over 40 people, between both athletes and cheerleaders come out, it was a packed house!

The competition is always high during the Games Week, which is a no brainer when there are medals on the line. Husband and wife jabs help break the ice and keep us laughing. Bronze medalist Ian poked fun at his dear wife Ruthie when she pitched a long shot “well you won’t beat me that way”. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Kelly and Meagan from Diabetes Canada who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. They were a great addition to our day with so much valuable information to share with our athletes and campers.

With Day 2 of ASC Camp in the mix, we kicked off the day with a Zumba class, learned the Mi’kmaq language through colouring, we mastered the art of kazoos during entertainment and filled our bellies with a delicious camp lunch. Busy, but in the best way!

Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence

At Sturgeon Creek 2, 20 competitors took off to play bean bag toss, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. Bean bag toss is one of the oldest games still played today, originating back to 1883! What a great way to get the day started!  Throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end. Still others were slightly to each side, but in the end the Round Robin produced 3 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Janice Feur, from Cancer care of Manitoba, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Summer campers had a great day of Sunrise Yoga, learning Mi’kmaq through coloring, and camp sing-alongs.

Seine River Retirement Residence

At Seine River Retirement Residence, 20 competitors took part in our Beanbag Toss event, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 6 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Mrs. Gerry. W after a tie breaker, knocked out all others with great throws and skills! The electricity could be felt in the air! What a great competition! We had a 2-way tie for 1st and 2nd place during the Beanbag Toss competition! This was the first time this has happened during the 2022 ASCSG! Residents went into a tiebreaker to determine the silver medalist and Champion! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by CNIB Vision Lose Rehab, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.  Marj M. told us, “Being an assistant during the games is great! Encouraging everyone to participate in events can be hard, but when a lot of people participate it makes me happy! I have had such a great week!”

Victoria Landing Retirement Residence

The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced many competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Mrs. Linda Y knocked out all others with her great throws!  Meanwhile, Silver Medalist Mr. Armand M. exclaimed “These bean bags are little but sure are tricky!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Karrie Smyth from the Canadian Cancer Society who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.  Summer campers had a great day of singing, dancing, tossing and coloring- a great day of fun!

Beacon Heights Retirement Residence

The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 19 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Mrs. Rejeanne D. knocked out all others with great throws! “I couldn’t have done it, without my cheer squad,” she exclaimed. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Leo Lavergne and Celine from Center Pauline Charron, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Cedarcroft Place Retirement Residence

We were very impressed by their skills and talents! Our competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Christy from the Alzheimer’s Society who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances!

Chapel Hill Retirement Residence

Tossing a simple Beanbag Toss is a fun but effective means of maintaining motor skills in older adults. By aiming at a target, older adults practice their hand-eye coordination. At Chapel Hill Retirement Residence, 14 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 3 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Michael C. knocked out all others with great throws, scoring most of his points on the final round! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Health & Wellness Director Allison, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.  Gold Medalist Michael, exclaimed, “Wow, I never thought I’d be the winner for this. I thought I was losing.” It made everyone laugh, great way to end the ceremony.

Summer campers had a great day of exercises, games, crafts, music, and all-around fun!

Cite Parkway Retirement Residence

At Cite Parkway, 16 competitors came out to our Beanbag Toss event, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end, others slightly to each side but few hit the 300 pt target!  At Cite Parkway, we have a regular player named Fran J. who is always at Beanbag Toss games. She inevitably throws at least 2 Beanbag Tosses over the top of the board, so we have named it “The Fran Manoeuvre”. She is a very good sport and accepts the honour of having a move named after her.  There were a few Fran Manoeuvres at today’s games. In the end the Round Robin produced 3 top competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Executive Director Cathy Cuccaro, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Fox Hollow Retirement Residence

At Fox Hollow Retirement Residence, 23 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come.  The morning got off to a sunny start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 23 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Jean R., who won the participation ribbon yesterday, won gold at todays game! It just goes to show that you can do whatever you put your mind to! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Executive Director Tanis Siddique, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Lakeridge Heights Retirement Residence

At Lakeridge Heights Retirement 20 competitors warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gathered with great anticipation of things to come. During our bean bag toss we had a lot of new athletes join in on the fun! The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 20 competitors with scores worthy of the championship!  Our residents are very competitive and want to be a National Champion. They were feeling great about their final scores so at the end of the bean bag tournament, after winners were announced, they spontaneously burst into song: We are the champions” by Queen. They finished with a cheer.  Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by our Executive Director Warren, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Diana, our Gold Medalist has just been trying to move out of her house and close it for selling. She joked “This beat emptying the house any day! Glad I took the week off to play games!”

McCarthy Place Retirement Residence

Mrs. M knocked out all others with great throws and every resident played with big smiles on their faces. Summer campers had a great day of fun, laughter, and memories made. Resident Mr. P exclaimed “Lots of Happy Campers!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Executive Director Dan Vito and Health &Wellness Director Leisha Higgins who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Summit Heights Retirement Residence

At Summit Heights, 16 competitors, tossed wildly for a chance at the top, while the spectators cheered with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as competitors warmed up with Zumba and then had practice throws until game time.  We were very impressed by their skill and talents!  Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Ben Sommerville, National Director of Operations, ASC who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. The surprise visit by Ben made our day! Love is not what you say, its what you do!

Summer Campers are getting ready for campfire sing-along and are very excited about s’mores and hot chocolate. It looks like the weather will be nice for a great day at camp!
